Not so long ago, I sat with a group of women from my neighborhood. At the time, we were all stay at home mothers and housewives, and on early Friday evenings we'd gather to gossip and eat fatty snacks and allow our young children to run amok. We shared mostly banal talk of tablecloths, housekeeping and sofa covers, but sometimes, a glass of wine was enough to open the emotional doors, and deep, dark feelings were voiced. At the end of one particularly vino-blotted happy hour, a lady blurted out that she didn't want to go home. She said that her husband would want sex that night, and that it was hard for her to get in the mood because she felt she stank of baby puke and dirty diapers.

I thought that was an interesting statement, so I made some paintings about it.

The symbolic digital portraits that comprise the series "Sacred Lives" have their inspiration taken from the artwork found on Mexican devotional candles. Every object in each portrait has a meaning, and each subject has an emblematic "angel" beside them.
